This alagaupu (Samoan proverb) comes from the waters off Savai'i. Pu'ava is a rocky headland between Papa and Falealupo where crossing currents make passage dangerous; just beyond it lies Fagalele, a sheltered bay where sailors could finally find calm water and rest. Spoken as an upu fa'amafanafana — words of comfort — it reassures someone facing hardship that relief is close at hand: after the danger of the crossing comes calm water, much as one might say "after rain there comes sunshine."
