When a canoe's hull plank was stove in during a voyage, the crew wouldn't stop to make a proper repair — they'd lash a patch over the hole and press on, leaving the real fix for when they reached shore. This alagaupu is invoked for any provisional solution: a stopgap held together just long enough to get through, not meant to be mistaken for the final word. It's also used when someone shares an opinion or a report but isn't yet ready to vouch for it as complete or unchangeable — a reminder that some answers are built to hold for now, not forever.
