The Interrupted Throw — Samoan Proverb Tee
Ua tulia afega.
"The throwing-ground is overrun."
This alagaupu (Samoan proverb) comes from tagati'a, a traditional game in which a player hurls a long, slender wooden dart, the ti'a, down a course after first striking it against a small mound of packed clay (paga) to build momentum. The afega is the run-up spot from which the thrower takes his approach. Ua tulia afega describes onlookers crowding that spot, hindering the player from making his throw. Figuratively, it describes an undertaking — especially a discussion — interrupted by the arrival of a stranger: used respectfully (upu fa'aaloalo) when good manners call for attending to a visitor before returning to one's own affairs, or as a caution (upu taofiofi) when one prefers the stranger not learn what is underway.
