The False Embrace — Samoan Proverb Tee

O le pupulu a Valomua.
"The intercession of Valomua."

This alagaupu (Samoan proverb) is said of someone doing a thing half-heartedly, or of a person who pretends love and friendship they do not feel. It comes from the story of Tupuivao, a son of Queen Taufau, who suspected his wife Iliganoa and his brother Toilolo of an illicit relationship and banished Toilolo to Tutuila. As Toilolo left Satupaitea for exile, Chief Valomua — a relative — met him on the road. Feigning friendship, Valomua took him by the shoulders as if to intercede (pulupulu) on his behalf, though the gesture was hollow. It is used as an upu fa'aulaula or faifai — mocking words for insincere sympathy or a half-hearted effort.
