E sola le fai, 'ae tu'u le foto.
"The sting-ray escapes, but it leaves its barb behind."

This alagaupu (Samoan proverb) draws on the stingray's sharp, barbed tail spine, which easily breaks off and remains lodged in a wound even after the fish itself has swum away. Traditionally spoken as an upu fa'anoanoa (words of regret), it carries the meaning: the evil a man does lives on after him. Consequences outlast the one who caused them.
