THE STORY BEHIND IT:

This saying was born as an honorific title for a rare 'ie toga — a finely woven sacred mat, treasured above ordinary possessions. There was only one of it in existence, yet its value outweighed a thousand common things put together. According to oral tradition, a noble Samoan woman named Tauolosi'i offered a single, highly treasured fine mat to the Tui Toga (King of Tonga) to successfully plead for the lives of thousands of condemned Samoan captives. That single offering held the immense value of a thousand lives.
